Power Up gets STRONGER!
“Students can power up with FREE breakfast everyday in all Palm Beach County Schools!” See individual schools for meal times.
The Palm Beach County School Food Service Department has been growing our breakfast program over the past 10 years, each year adding more schools to be able to reach the goal of providing a free breakfast for all students. It has been five years since we added the remaining 53 schools and implemented the Power Up With Breakfast program to enable all students the opportunity to eat a free breakfast. Our staffs served over 270,000 more breakfasts in September 2018 as compared to September 2017. So just how many breakfasts did we serve in FY18? We served over 8 million!
Spreading the word...
Marketing has been a very important factor in our success. We began by marketing the program to our District leadership and then to principals to get buy-in to move forward. The School Food Service marketing team created posters for each of the grade levels, which are displayed in the cafeteria to encourage students to eat breakfast at school. We have sent flyers home, used Parent Link to advertise the program to parents and again this July, for the second year in a row, we sent a multi-page booklet home to every student’s family that highlighted information for our programs including the Free and Reduced Meal application process, the free breakfast program and the After School Snack Program.
School Food Service will continue to develop additional marketing concepts to spread the word about free breakfast because studies show that hungry children arriving at school have less energy available for cognitive and social activities resulting in learning difficulties. Simply stated, hungry children cannot learn. That is why eating a nutritionally sound breakfast, every day, has been identified as a key component in a child's ability to learn. Our department’s vision of Kid’s First will continue to be a priority in our goal to get the word out about the benefits of free school breakfast.
